He also enlisted as a substitute and mustered into federal service February 22, 1865, as a private with Co. K, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.
He married Anna Christina Fohl and fathered George Luther (b. 09/07/69) and Charles William (b. 02/07/72, d. 09/17/87). In 1890, he lived in Menallen Township, Adams County, where he died from "apoplexy" at age 70-11-17 in his son George's home.
