Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He died while supporting combat operations in Karmah. Max graduated from Oregon State University in 1988 and joined the Marines almost immediately. Before coming to Hawaii in 2007, he served in Virginia, California, Okinawa and was on his second deployment to Iraq. His service awards include two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and five Meritorious Service Medals. He leaves behind his loving wife, Evelyn, and four children. Fellow soldiers remember Max as a friend, mentor, someone larger than life, and extremely bright but his first love was leading the Marines. He was the kind of guy who was a dedicated family man, a natural leader and a caring buddy who always took care of business and never wanted to make his problems someone else's.
