He married Clarissa Laflin on 6 October 1836 in Lee, Massachusetts. He had military service as a Captain. He started his career in Lee, Massachusetts with his brother, Cyrus, in a paper manufacturing company. But he was better known as a bridge and railroad construction engineer, having been involved with the bridges across the Cumberland River in Nashville and Clarksville, Tennessee as well as the one across the Kentucky River at Frankfort, Kentucky. In 1856 he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate.
