James was the sixth of twelve children of George and Jane McCoy Cook. His land in Franklin County, PA was part of large holdings of the original Cook (Koch) immigrant George Adam Koch who came to America in 1741. James first married Christiana "Tina" Huber in 1853 and they had one son, Albert Stover Cook. After Tina died in 1855, he married Catharine Stoler in 1857 and they had ten children: Sylvester, John Stoler, William McSherry, Eliza Jane, James McCoy, Charles Alexander, Eugene B, Catherine, Harry Stoler, Oscar James. James registered for the draft in the Civil War, listing his occupation as a carpenter. Around 1884, he moved his family west by train to Illinois, settling on a farm near Lanark, which is where he lived until he died.
