According to the 1880 Census, her father was born in Maryland and her mother in Germany. Maria was the mother of seven children, six of whom were living when the 1910 Census was taken.

Thanks to researcher Larry Thompson for the information that Maria's parents were Jesse Harvey and Elizabeth Culver.
