RUTH BROWN, AGE 88, of Plymouth, passed away
She was born June 13, 1920 in Meramaec Highlands, MO, a daughter of the late August and Ida (Sibothan) Neubert. She graduated from High School in Kirkwood MO and then attended UW Madison graduating Suma Cum Laude.
She married Eric Brown August 4, 1941. After WWII the couple made their home in Plymouth where they owned and operated two Theaters, the Majestic and the Plymouth Theater. Closing the Majestic in the mid 1950s, they continued operating the Plymouth Theater until 1979.
Along with their theaters, they also operated a mink ranch on Hwy C west of Plymouth while they owned and managed multiple properties in and about Plymouth.
Her husband preceded her in death Sept 2, 1997.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Plymouth and was very active in the church, served on the consistory, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, attended adult Bible class and assisted in caring for the gardens around the church.
Ruth was a gifted woman who had many talents. She recognized a need for having dance classes, and began teaching children in her home. She moved the operation to her church fellowship hall, teaching as many as 200 children, using the proceeds to buy two statues from Italy for the church altar and rewiring the hall.
She continued teaching dance for many years upgrading to adult instruction, which led to the formation of the Plymouth Dance Club. She and her family also raised horses, and Ruth was instrumental in forming the Plymouth Trail Riders Club.
She and Eric sponsored the educations of several children from foreign countries. They were members of the Ventures in People program through World Vision, and made several trips to Haiti, in order to help provide educational and medical services to children.
Ruth was a true believer in community involvement. She became a member of the Plymouth VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Loyalty Chapter Order of Eastern Star, a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the Theater Guild of WI. Her spirit and vitality as well as her entrepreneurial attitude will be missed by both her family and her many friends.
Survivors include four children, Susan (Neil) Tenpas of Whitmore Lake MI, Fred (Pilar) Brown of El Paso TX, Lynne (Ralph) Oppeneer of Cascade and Bruce (Sue) Brown of Plymouth; nine grandchildren, Theresa (Jordan) Herron, Chris Tenpas, Nicole Tenpas, Fred Brown Jr, Derek Brown, Jennifer Schultis, Erica (Frank) Brockway, Kayla Brown and Sam Brown; six great grandchildren, Ivy, Amelia and Elijah Herron, Haley and Erik Brown and Rachael Schultis. She is also survived by one brother Ralph (Rosemary) Neubert of Waco TX, and her foster Son in-law Gene Hasseler of Cato WI.
She was preceded in death by one foster daughter Rosemary Hasseler.
Following cremation, a memorial Mass will be held Tuesday evening June 10, 6:00PM at ST. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Plymouth. The Rev. Daniel Repp, Vicar will officiate. Inurnment will be in Plymouth Union Cemetery.
