Betty Staton Hogan, 64, of Charlottesville, is resting in the arms of her Savior and Lord, now totally healed from her journey with cancer. She passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her family. Betty loved the Lord and was an encouragement and inspiration to others throughout her life.
Born April 24, 1944, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Gerald and Anne Lovelace Staton and is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Ray Hogan Jr.; four daughters, Anne Kistler and her husband, Eric, of Lynchburg, Katie Hogan Williamson of Charlottesville, Sara Warren and her husband, Todd, of Salem, and Laurie Hogan of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Jane Grills of Lynchburg and Bristol, Tenn., and Nancy Harris of Lynchburg; and seven grandchildren, Haley Williamson, Peter Kistler, John Kistler, Adam Warren, Thomas Kistler, Elsie Anne Kistler and Ryan Warren.
In addition to her immediate family, Betty is survived by her uncle Henry Lovelace of Gladys; her mother-in-law, Virginia Hogan of Bedford; sisters and brothers-in-law; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
A native of Lynchburg, she was a 1962 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. She was an excellent student, involved in many school activities, loved and admired by both her peers and teachers. One of her sweetest high school memories was being elected Senior Class Queen. She attended the College of William and Mary and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in June of 1966. On July 9, 1966, she married her high school sweetheart, Ray. They were married nearly 42 years and had been friends since they met in July of 1957.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and teacher. After just one year of teaching, she followed her calling to stay home and raise her four girls. She returned to teaching in 1982 when her youngest daughter started school. She served as a Latin teacher at Lane High School, Heritage Christian School, Orange County High School and finished her teaching career at The Covenant School, retiring in 1999 to pursue another career she loved, full-time grandmother. Betty was a joyful servant of the Lord and enjoyed the strong circle of friends she worshiped with at Trinity Presbyterian Church. She always put her family, friends and students first, and was always there for her children, supporting their extracurricular events. She rarely missed a tennis match, cheerleading competition, field hockey or lacrosse game for one of her girls. As a wife, Betty loved her life with Ray, often going with him to various sporting events, although if she had chosen the agenda for the day, they probably would have gone to the movies. She loved being part of a strong, closely bonded family and cherished the traditions and memories unique to the Hogan family. Betty never knew her father because he was killed In World War II when she was less than a year old. In April of 2006, she was able to realize a lifelong dream of visiting her father's grave site in Luxembourg.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Greg Thompson and Pastor Tony Giles officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, followed by a reception at Trinity Presbyterian Church from 5 to 7 p.m.
