Son of Paris and Ina May (Callahan) Slaughter. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He married after the war, and had 7 children. He was a classically trained tenor singer, and also played the mandolin. After the war, he worked as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service, and later, he was the chief dispatcher for the Indianapolis Department of Transportation. He was a devout Christian.
