Earnest's mother, Hattie Bell Austin, died when he was 2 so he and brother Arthur were raised by her sister Flora and brothers Homer and Arthur Bell moving down to Randolph, Orange Co., VT where he went to school, visiting his father and half siblings until they moved down too. He managed the shoe department in the family Bell Brothers Store in Randolph with his brother Arthur.
During the World war he served his country as sergeant in the commissary department having charge of the purchase of clothing. He was stationed for fifteen months at Fort Preble in Portland, Me., returning in February, 1919.
In June, 1920, he married Valentine Packard and had two children, Dorothy was nine, and William was six at his early death at only 36. His home, his wife and his children, meant much to Earnest and to them he gave his devotion and for them he constantly and faithfully worked.
He is also survived by his father, T. S. Austin of Essex Junction, his brother, Arthur Austin of Lebanon, N. H. his aunt Flora Bell, and his uncle, Homer B. Bell, of Randolph.
There are also three half-brothers and one half-sister of Essex Junction. The American Legion, the Masonic lodge attended the funeral.
