Cross "C.C." was the son of George Miller Conquest and Mary Tabitha (Eskew) [Moses] Crowell. There is a record of a family member stating that Cross was born in Mississippi, but the obituary and all census records show him being born in Alabama.
Cross's siblings were:
John O. Franklin Crowell, Annie Catherine (Crowell) Bertling, Lula Oma (Crowell) Ramsey, Minnie Virginia Crowell (born and died Aug. 7, 1877), Lillie Alice (Crowell) Biggs. He also had three half-brothers, Lucius Newton "Newt" Moses, Luciene Syme Moses (twin to Newt-born and died on Sept.17, 1858, and Edward Ira Moses.
Cross was married to Ada Probst in Caldwell County on Feb. 15, 1893 by Bro. Tom McCarley. Cross and Ada had eight children. They were: Wiseman Homer Crowell (11/21/1893-11/29/1982; Lena May Crowell (1/5/1895-7/3/1895; Earl Francis Crowell (1/10/1896-5/23/1958; Vernon French Crowell (5/15/1897-11/18/1990; Charlotte "Lottie" (Crowell) [Burger] Woodruff (7/18/1898-4/24/1979; Arthur Buford Crowell (3/4/1900-4/13/1988; George Morris Crowell (8/8/1902-12/23/1989; Reagan Allen Crowell (10/4/1906-11/22/1995.
After Ada's death on Nov. 3, 1917, Cross married Genora (Smith) DuBoise in Lockhart, Texas in 1920. Genora helped Cross raise his seven children. Genora died on Nov. 17, 1945 at the age of 84. She was first buried in McNeil cemetery, and later her body was moved to Lockhart Municipal Burial Park, in Caldwell Co., Texas.
At the age of 78 Cross married Julia (Carter)[Bowen] in Caldwell Co., on Oct. 23, 1946.
Cross was 92 years old at the time of his death.
It was written of him that he was a true example of the pioneers having lived by the principles of days, when a man's word was his bond and everyone helped his fellowman.
