Stella was the daughter of George Ryan and Minnie Traphagan. While the family was visiting Traphagan relatives in Lookeba, Caddo Co., OK in 1899, her father died. He is mostly likely buried in the cemetery there, but no headstone has been found for him. Stella, her siblings and her mother had to back it back to IL with help from the Red Cross.

She married Albert Lindsey Justice on 16 Oct 1901 and later divorced from him in 1922. Together they had 9 children. She then married 9 Feb 1924 to William Franklin Mullen, but they later divorced too. Stella and Wm had 3 children together, the youngest, Norma Jean dying as an infant.
