John Henry enlisted in the Civil War on 21 Dec 1861 in Co. I, 40th IN INF. He mustered out on 21 Dec 1865. At the Battle of Mission Ridge in Nov 1863 he was slightly wounded in the arm. On 31 Jan 1864 he was discharged due to injury at Chattanooga, TN, but then re enlisted the next day. On 14 May 1864 at General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign in GA he was carried off the battlefield due to rehumatism in the hips and knees and chronic diarreah due to exposure. In June the same year he was admitted to the hospital for a back injury resulting from a fall.
Eventually he died of rheumatism of the heart and lived with the effects from the exposure the rest of his life.

"Co. I. 40 REG. IND. VOL. INF." Saying on stone: "A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled."
