Joseph Grincavage was the son of Lithuanian natives Joseph and Constance Grincavage. Born in Shamokin he was a schoolteacher in the area for most of his life. He graduated in 1926 from the Coal Township High School and then after earning his teaching degree at Millersville College married Clara Topolski in 1930. He taught elementary school in Ranshaw and at the Pulaski school. Later he was the principal of the Lincoln School.

Joseph was the father of two daughters, and brother to William, Helen, and Violet. He died at age 85 at his home in Coal Township.
