Korean War: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles W. Detert (ASN: 0-1333188), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 February 1952 in the vicinity of Songnae-Dong, Korea. On that date, in an attempt to lure the enemy through friendly lines and capture prisoners, Captain Detert alerted his men to receive an enemy patrol. The enemy, given a chance to surrender, immediately began firing. Captain Detert gave to order to commence firing, personally directing it. When the enemy was repulsed and began to withdraw Captain Detert led a patrol in pursuit. Leading his men through an intense enemy artillery barrage he succeeded in capturing two prisoners thus completing his company's mission. The outstanding leadership and personal courage displayed by Captain Detert reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. (This took place during the Hoengsong Massacre, also known as Massacre Valley.)
