Richard Black, retired state inspector, dies
Richard D. Black, 69 of 1010 NW 23rd Avenue, retired state tax inspector and was a resident of Gainesville for 25 years died yesterday afternoon at University of Florida Medical Center, following an illness of several weeks.
He retired from his tag inspection post Jan. 1 after 24 years on the job.
Black was born November 26, 1892 in Bamberg, S. C. son of Robert Black and Martha Padgett, deceased. He served in both World Wars I and II.
He was a brother of two former state senators, the late R. Lucas Black, Gainesville, and J. Graham Black, Jacksonville.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Jasper Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his widow, Mary Keene Black; a daughter, Ann, of Gainesville; five sons Richard D. III, Gainesville; Robert B. of Immokalee, Vernon, of Flagstaff, Arizona; John L., San Diego, California and M/Sgt. R. D. Jr., stationed in Germany; two brothers; J. Hayward, Immokalee, and Sheldon, New Orleans; a sister, Mrs. F. Y. Smith, Alachua and a nephew R. L. Black, Jr. Gainesville.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in the Williams-Thomas Chapel, with Rev. Allen Stuart of First Methodist Church of Alachua officiating.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, with Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers include Shellie McKinney, Sam Shoemaker, Pierce Smith, Jim Bishop, Robert F. Hiatt and Alex Bliziotes.
