Laura Adam (Oberholtzer) Swayze was born in Centreville, Knowlton Twp., Warren Co., New Jersey on October 28, 1867. Her mother, Sarah Ann (Faunce) Oberholtzer, died when Laura was seven, and her father, Abraham A. Oberholtzer, lived in Pennsylvania with his second wife. Laura, her sister Alice, and her brother Grant were raised by their grandfather John D. Faunce, a merchant in Centreville.
As a girl, she told her only granddaughter many years later, she used to go into the woods and smoke cigars. Likely she got these from her grandfather's store....
When Laura was 18 she married Whitfield Swayze, age 26, because she felt he had the nicest horse and carriage of any of her beaus. Laura and Whit settled into married life in Mount Hermon, Warren Co. where their first child Cora Ethel was born in 1889, five days after Laura's 22nd birthday. Son Earl Valentine was born on Valentine's Day, 1895 near Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania.
For a time, Laura and her family lived in Bangor, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, then nearby Bethlehem before moving to Willow Grove, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. Husband Whit, a carpenter, was employed in the construction of Willow Grove Park, an amusement attraction in suburban Philadelphia.
Laura and Whit raised their two children in Willow Grove where Whit worked many years constructing homes in that locale. Her son, Earl, after serving in World War I as a medic, became Willow Grove's first Chief of Police. Daughter Cora became one of the very first young women in the town to purchase and operate her own car.
Laura had the opportunity to enjoy her three grandchildren and lived to see some of her great-grandchildren. She had been very busy in numerous organizations in Willow Grove; she was known as an active, outgoing lady. Laura passed away at age 80 on son Earl's birthday, Valentine's Day, 1948. Many, many people attended her funeral services....Laura was dressed in her favorite color, orchid. Her final journey was from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania back home to Warren Co., New Jersey.
