From the Southern Democrat, 1915: L.W, Armstrong Sketch of his life.
As I Have been away from your state (Alabama) and county (Blount) for a long period of time and having been born and raised in your state and county, I thought I would write you a short sketch of my life.

I am now getting along toward the end of my life's journey, having attained the age of 77 years and 6 months. I was born in Blount County, Alabama on the 19th of October 1837, in Murphree's Valley, near Oneonta. I joined the Old Shiloh M.E. Church in 1852, at the last camp meeting that ever held at that place.

I was married to Miss Nancy C. Cornelius, one of the finest and best women I ever saw, on the 10th of July, 1860, by Rev. Coming (Cummins) Hallmark.

I joined Company I 49th Alabama and sent to Port Hudson on the Mississippi River in Louisiana on the 28th of October, 1862 and stayed there until July 14th, 1863. Stayed at home until 12th of November 1863. I then went to Cahaha, Ala., to parole camps, and stayed there until May 21, 1864.

There is still a few of Company I scattered about. I will give you the names and addresses of what I know that are West of the Mississippi River. William Murphree of Alvarado, Texas, Barnett Ellison Mossie, Hill County, Solomon Cornelius, Oklahoma, Rev. W.G.H. Crump of Headrick, Ol;ahoma, and one belonged to the Regiment, James Griffith of Allvarado, Texas is all know of, but if any of them see this I want them to write me.

Having lots of rain here. Small grain looks good,
L.W. Armstrong, Venus, Texas, May 6th, 1915.
