Abiel married Rhoda Drake on July 2, 1789 in Easton, Massachusetts.
He held the rank of Lieutenant in the militia.

"Mr. Alger was a noted fox-hunter; and his farm being in proximity to the mountain, he found plenty of them. Oftentimes in the winter season he would procure a quantity of meat and placing it in an open field he would wrap himself in buffalo robes, select a position near, and watch the coming of reynard. He was a good marksman, and would frequently obtain several of these creatures in one night. The first pair of oxen he purchased, after coming to Marlborough, he paid for in fox-skins to the value of fifty dollars."

Mr. Abiel Alger, an old and respected citizen of Winchendon, died a few days since at the age of eighty-five. Mr. Alger and his wife, who survives him, lived together over sixty-eight years. Of their twelve children, eleven are living, ten of them in Winchendon. Of forty-eight grand-children, thirty-seven are living; and of seventeen great-grandchildren, sixteen are living.
