He joined the Navy during World War I and was discharged August 8, 1922. He married Carrie Ristad in 1923 and they had 6 children, Marian, married to Howard Blehm; Lillian, married to Gordon Lindstrom; Lyla, married to Roy Sundby; Vernon, married to Delores Lindstrom; Grace, married to Wendell Krause; and Robert, married to Marjorie Carlson.
