Born at home on September 29, 1939, to William "Custer" and Mary Katherine (Fowler) Gilliland. He was of the Methodist Faith.
Carl graduated from Bloomington High School in 1957. After graduation Carl worked for Graham Motor Sales, later going to work delivering for Goodyear. Carl served six years with the National Guard before joining the Bloomington Fire Department and working his days off for Ellis Floral. Later he owned his own plumbing company.
Carl's most memorable times were working on the fire department. He always told family and friends he looked forward to getting to work. He enjoyed the men he worked with and the friends he made there.
After retiring he enjoyed working in his garage and telling stories about racing cars when he was in high school and after graduating. He also enjoyed days he was able to take his pontoon boat out and fish with his children.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother and father and only brother Robert "Bobby" Leon Gilliland.
Carl was a wonderful husband, friend, father and provider. He is survived by his wife Autumn of nearly 20 years. Two sons, Coty Douglas Gilliland and girlfriend Mallory Pemberton, and Andrew Gilliland; two daughters, Cory Staggs and husband Stephen, and Carla Gilliland and her boyfriend Aaron Wampler; two grandsons, Caleb Dylan Gilliland Parker Gilliland-Wampler, and two granddaughters, Breanna Rose Staggs and Katie Gilliland, all of Bloomington. He was Caleb's favorite "Papaw."
Carl went to be with the Lord while his family was at his side.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home with burial to follow at Garrison Chapel Cemetery.
