Raymond Edward "Ed" Fenner III
Aka: KC's Jazz Voice
Ed Fenner passed away on Sunday May 18, 2008 three months shy of his 72nd birthday. He was born August 18, 1936 in Bridgeport CT to Raymond Edward Fenner Jr. and Dora Bell (Willett) Fenner both now deceased. He leaves behind a son Raymond Edward Fenner IV, a daughter Kristen Lee (Fenner) Damazio, a grand daughter Heather Alycen Burk, a brother Richard Arthur Fenner, nephew Richard Arthur Fenner II and Carol Reed his companion of the last eight years.
Ed married Marilyn Lou DeVries, the mother of his children while at the University of Denver where he majored in Business and minored in Music. He then attended Law School at Duke University and later received his MBA from Northeastern.
His life and careers were quite diverse with the common thread being that he took them all on at 110%. When he belonged to Los Caballeros Riding Club he never missed a ride and became an accomplished horseman. When he belonged to LA Athletic Club he maintained a strict regiment of exercise and nutrition. The same was true when he belonged to the Malibu Yacht Club. Whatever his interest was, whether it was in business or recreation, he became an expert and was happy to share his passion with whoever he encountered.
Early on he worked for Litton Industries and quickly rose to be President of one their companies in Southern California. By the 1970s he owned a six acre ocean view ranch in Malibu which he gave up to become a dairy farmer in Springfield MO. His timing couldn't have been worse. President Reagan revoked the dairy subsidies and Ed was wiped out financially. After a stint back in the corporate world as a CFO, he bought the Brownfield House in Blue Springs MO which he turned into an Antique Store and then a Tea House. He had made another 180 degree turn from negotiating multi-million dollar loans to conducting Mad Hatter parties for youngsters.
As a life long lover of Jazz and a fair musician himself he became more and more interested in the Jazz scene in Kansas City. He dedicated the remaining years of his life to the promotion of Jazz in KC. He could be found most evenings hopping from one venue to another listening to, writing about and working tirelessly as an advocate and ambassador for Jazz. This is his legacy.
writing about and promoting local performers. Hundreds of people around the world received his weekly "Jazz Notes" newsletter, Weekly Jazz Calendar and went to his [email protected] website.
As was his nature Ed "burned the candles at both ends" and it finally caught up with him and his heart came to rest leaving a huge void in the lives of his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers a donation to UMKC Conservatory of Music at to establish the Ed Fenner Memorial Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
