He was one of the pioneers of Stanley Township, Huron County, Ontario and had lived in the County for nearly 70 years. Born in Connaught, Ireland, he came to Canada in 1831 at the age of 27 years. He worked for a time in the Welland Canal but also worked on a boat running between Goderich and Winsor. In 1837 he was married to Elizabeth Flood. Ten of their fourteen children survived him.
