Morris O. Smith

Former Shelbyville resident Morris O. Smith, 72, Anderson, died Tuesday at Community Hospital North, Indianapolis.

Born on Feb. 28, 1925, in Shelbyville, he was the son of Mahlon and Pearl T. (Sherman) Smith. He was married to Jayne (Jarrett) Smith, and she survives.

A graduate of Ball State University, Mr. Smith taught biology and shop at Parker City-Farmland High School for five years and building trades, drafting and architectural drawing at Madison Heights High School for 39 years. He retired in 1995.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Tuscaloosa in the European and Asian theaters from 1943 to 1946. He was an active member of the U.S. Naval Reserve for 30 years, retiring in 1976 as a lieutenant commander.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pendleton, and Phi Sigma Epsilon.

Survivors also include a son, Stephen D. Smith; three daughters, Melissa S. Hannah, Susan M. Barrett and Alisa S. Cline; two brothers, Norman Smith and Russell Lambert; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, Anderson, with the Rev. Tammy Mills officiating. Burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post of Delaware County.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Madison County.
