Horace Milo Huntley was born December 7, 1863 in Ilion, New York. He departed this life July 1, 1954, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 24 days. He was the Son of Dennison Theadon Huntley and Emily Foskett Huntley. When he was six years old, he moved with his family to Kansas from Ilion, New York. He later became a freighter from Caldwell, Kansas to El Reno, Oklahoma driving two teams of horses in tandem. There were no railroads then south of the Kansas line. He married Elizabeth McBride, daughter of Emanuel and Sarah Hatfield McBride, eldest of eight children in Storville Township in or near Bluff City Kansas, on June 20, 1886. They made their home near Montezuma, Kansas where Florence Viola and Edna were born in a sod house. The cold winter and dry summer's discouraged them, so Horace and his father ran in the Oklahoma land run and staked a claim in Logan County. Here Horatio Milo Ray was born August 21, 1892 in a log cabin. The family grew weary of cultivating corn and cotton with oxen, so they moved in 1900 to east and north of Wakita, Grant County Oklahoma Territory. The three children attended Wakita school in a frame building, in the north part of town. Charles Jacobson was one of the teachers. On July 16, 1901 Golda Sarah Icie June was born in a dug out house. The Huntley's moved east and north of Clyde, Oklahoma where Izma was born. Ray rode a horse to get Dr. Miller from Wakita who was also in attendance when Icie was born. There was no doctor for the other three children. Horace Milo Huntley and family used horses and mules for farming and hitched to buggy or wagon to take them to town or church at the Prairie View School House Dist. 31 where Methodist services were held in afternoons. Ministers came from Wakita or Medford by horse and buggy. Icie began school here with Mae Dahlem as teacher in 1906. Horace Milo and a neighbor O.P Bryson owned and operated a header-binder together in harvesting their wheat with cooperation of both families. Approximately in 1906 the Huntley's and community obtained their first telephone. Ten to twelve families were on one line. Each family had their own ring, such as two shorts and one long meant Huntley's were to answer but other people listened in. The central or switch was in Clyde. Near this time the Huntley's purchased a pump organ and what a fine time the family and friends had singing. They bought a Home Comfort Cook Range with a reservoir where water was heated for dishes or baths that were taken in a wash tub beside the range. The stove could burn wood, coal or cow chips. But what good meals were prepared, six to eight loaves of bread a week were made all through summer and winter. Coal oil lamps were used for lights. An Aladdin Lamp using coal oil made a brighter light for Ray to study. In later years Ray taught school 5 years at Springdale Dist. 7 Grant County Oklahoma. The family attended Wesylan Methodist Church one half mile south of the school house. A Reverend Lewis who lived in the community often preached. In 1918 their first car was bought. By this time Izma and Icie were in high school at Medford. They did light housekeeping for rooms as there were no school buses. They later became school teachers. Florence married George Northnutt ~ Edna married Chales Huffman ~ Ray married Ellen Lora McDonald, after the death of Ellen , Ray married Stella Thorton ~ Icie married Lester Taggert ~ Izma married Roland Huges. Mr & Mrs. Huntley moved to Wakita, Oklahoma in 1946 and observed their 68th Wedding Anniversary in 1954. At this writing October 1979 there are 34 decadents of the Horace Milo Huntley Family.
