John McDonald was born May 19, 1862 at Norristown (Smoky Row) Penn. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to College Springs, Iowa where he grew to manhood. On February 21, 1884 he was united in marriage to Anna Eliza Henry at Clarinda, Iowa. In 1885 he moved his family to Ravana, a small town in western Kansas, where they endured the hardships of early settlers. After four years they returned again to Iowa, and three years later returned to their farm in Ravana. At the opening of the "Cherokee Strip" they took a claim twelve miles east of Manchester, Oklahoma where they made their home until 1928 when they moved to Caldwell for the remaining years of his life. On April 22, 1950 John passed away in his home where he wanted to be at the age of 87 years 11 months and 3 days. About 43 years ago he was saved in the Wesleyan Methodist Church and was baptized. In 1927 he took his stand with the Church of God and remained true to his faith until death. John and Anna were blessed with seven children ~ five daughters and two sons ~ Anna Elizabeth, Mary Lula, Ethel May, Ellen Leora and Gladys Faye, Henry Edmond was their first born son who only lived six days and Glenford Ercille. He was a good husband and a loving father and was appreciated as a Christan Gentleman by those who knew him. He endured the hard things in life as a good soldier of the cross and the community in which he lived will be better for his having lived there. John and Anna had been married for 66 years. A Poem for our "Father" ~ "Our Father was a gentle soul in thought and word and deed; Never complaining of his lot, fulfilling every need. And woven closely in life's pattern, as earthly ways he trod, were the treads so bright and shining of undying faith in God. And now the busy hands are stilled, God willed that he should go; and yet to those he left behind it seemed a mortal blow; for nowhere in this vale of tears can there be found another to fill the void or take the place of our departed Father."
