This is often quoted in vignettes by my grandfather, Jim Edwards. He is no doubt the biggest influence in my love for genealogy. Even though he passed away when I was only 9 years old, his passion for learning about our ancestors and his willingness to preserve what he knew about them, is one thing I will always treasure.
He was so proud of our Confederate ancestors. I haven't found a Yankee in our family tree, and I highly doubt I'll ever find one. He was a proud member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, just as I have been a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy since I was 18. His journals of research, documenting the excitement of finding our ancestors served under the gallant Confederate Generals Lee, Jackson, and Forrest, and discovering our European and Native American roots. It's almost a way of connecting with him, even though I know he's not here. To feel what I know he felt when finding these things. He did all of this before Ancestry.com, Find A Grave, and online research, so I know it took a lot of patience and persistence.
He is surely remembered, and I will always treasure the memories I have of him, and the memories of his family he's gifted me by telling them. Pawpaw, I love you. You will never be forgotten. You are truly an inspiration and I can't imagine my life without this passion of genealogy.

My Friend and Buddy, Closest thing to a brother I ever had. Mr. E, to me. He was a wonderful family man. Loved Jo and his girls and their families beyond believable. Also the best Boss man I ever had.
He was raised in Attala County and after he finished his Education he became Superintendent of Schools in Boca Roton, Florida. He moved back to Attala County and went to work In the Attala County School System. After several years he was elected Superintendent for one term. He then went to The Drew Mississippi School District and remained Superintendent there until he had to retire due to illness. (Cancer)
He was a history buff and loved geneology. That was my first taste of geneology too.. His legacy will always be that he was a True Friend and His Word was his Bond. He was Loved by Many of Us.

James Conley Edwards of Ethel, 66, died May 24, 2005 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, at Ebenezer Baptist Church near Zama, where he was a member and Deacon. Rev. Larry Harvey officated. Masonic services were held at the gravesite with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Edwards was born October 15, 1938 in Kosciusko to Geneis Conley and Myrtis Mangrum Edwards.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Helen Ponder Edwards of Ethel; three daughters, Jamie Sample and husband Sam of Ebenezer, Kim Hester and husband Robert of Marydell, and Melissa Fayard and husband Nathan of Biloxi; a sister, Betty Ann Ferguson of Walls, and nine grandchildren.
Mr. Edwards was a retired educator after 34 years; a 1967 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in history, received a Masters Degree in Administration from Florida Atlantic University, West Palm Beach, Fla., and a Masters Degree and Specialist Degree in administration from Mississippi State University. He also was a member of Phi Delta Kappa.
He had served as Superintendent of Education in the Attala County School System, Hendry County Florida School System, and from 1992-2003 in Drew Municipal School System in Drew. He was a Shriner - Ft. Myers Scottish Rite, Ft. Myers, Fla., a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Lexington Lodge #24, Former Grand Master of Sugarland Masonic Lodge #281 in Clewiston, Fla., member of Mississippi State Association of Superintendents and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Active pallbearers were Sam Sample, Robert Hester, Nathan Fayard, Samuel Sample, Jr., Matthew Sample, and Patrick Sample. Honorary pallbearers were C.R. "Deter" Blanchard, Edward "Dobbin" Thrasher, Kempe Hodges, Aaron Tolleson, Lewis Hardy, Ed Oliver, Bill Dubard, James Kenneth Mangrum, and Jerry Allen.
Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
He was succeeded in death by his grandson, Justin Edwards Sample.
