Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth) Barkell, one of the pioneer women of Madison county, died Thursday night, January 15, 1909, at the home of her son, Richard Barkell, at Silver Star. Mrs. Barkell was 73 years of age and had resided in Montana since 1864. She was of English parentage, born at Devonshire, England, in 1835. Soon after her marriage to Joseph Barkell, also of English extraction, the couple set sail for America. The first few years of their lives in America were spent in th northern part of Michigan; from Michigan they went to Colorado. On coming to Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Barkell located at Alder gulch, where Mr. Barkell engaged in mining, the height of exciment then being on. After a few years in the placers, the family moved to Silver Star. Mr. Barkell died in 1889 and since that time Mrs. Barkell made her home with her son Richard. Mrs. Barkell is survived by two sons, James Henry and Richard Thomas, one daughter, Mrs John (Amelia) Wiant; also a nephew, Frnak Cox, all of whom were present when she died.
