Carol Anderson, a 20 year resident of Wenatchee, WA, died peacefully in her home on April 19, 2007, surrounded by her family, following a courageous three year battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in 1938, in Cold Spring, MN to Peter and Louise (Jacoby) Hennen and was raised with her three sisters, Arliss, Eloise and Lolly. She graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1956. Upon graduation she moved to Minneapolis, MN where she was employed by XCEL Energy.
Carol began her 45 year adventure with her husband, Mark Anderson in August, 1962, when they were married in Cold Spring, MN. After her early life in Minnesota, Carol moved with Mark to Sacramento, CA where they had their first child, Peter in 1963. In 1964, she and her young family moved to Ely, NV, where she had two daughters, Kristen in 1965, and Amy in 1970.
In 1978, she followed her miner husband to Pittsburgh, PA, followed in 1980, to Tonopah, NV. In 1984, they moved to Denver, CO, then in 1985, to Craig, CO and finally in 1986, to Wenatchee, WA. Carol's life was marked by her love for her family and friends. After her children were raised, she began her second career of service to others, primarily to profoundly challenged children and adults.
Her new family included Abe, Tommy, Matthew, Lisa, Bobby, Elsie, and many others who benefited from her unselfish and nurturing love. Her life of service began in Ely, NV where she was instrumental in starting a co-op preschool. She also volunteered at the local hospital and county senior center. In 1985, she became a volunteer for the Moffat County Hospice where she provided respite care.
Upon moving to Wenatchee, she resumed her volunteer service at the Wenatchee Public Schools and Head Start Program. In 1992, she became employed by the Okanogan Senior Citizens as a chore worker where she worked until her retirement in 2001. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served as president of the St. Lazarus Guild and was a long term member of her Bible Study group. In addition she was active in Cursillo and completed several years with Bible Study Fellowship. When her condition made her unable to actively do the things she loved, she dedicated herself to the Ministry of Praise and Mercy by praying for other people in need. Her career of volunteerism culminated in her participation in an investigational study for the treatment of refractory ovarian cancer at the University of Washington Hospital in late 2006. In her words "her assignment as a guinea pig."
Carol's life was highlighted by a love of reading, camping, gardening, cooking, and socializing with friends and relatives. Her fondest memories included the times spent in the mountains and valleys of Nevada, Colorado and Washington. She was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and received the Outstanding Service Award from the Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club. She is survived by her husband, Mark of Wenatchee; son, Peter (Stacey) of Reno, NV; daughters, Kristen (Jim) Mullen of Salt Lake City, UT and Amy of Scottsdale, AZ. Also surviving are her sisters, Arliss Dooley of Eden Prairie, MN and Eloise Johnson of Fairmont, MN.
Carol treasured her four grandchildren, Carolyn, Maureen, Jacob and Riley. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lolly.
