Elsie Grace Schmidlap Moore, 90, of Madison, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at The Waters of Clifty Falls.

She was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Kent, the daughter of William and Ruth Barron Schmidlap. She was the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Ramsey, who helped settle the Kent community in 1808. She attended the old Independence School and then Kent Grade School. She was a 1935 graduate of Hanover High School. She was the oldest living member of Kent Christian Church, where she had been a member since 1925. Her family had helped start the church in 1830. She was employed for several years with Madison State Hospital in the laundry department. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed preparing meals for her family, working in her church and working in her garden.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Moore of Scottsburg and William Moore of Madison; one daughter, Judy Buchheit of Hanover; one sister, Helen Eppley of Madison; one brother, Leon Schmidlap of Kent; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Moore, whom she married Dec. 12, 1936, and who died June 17, 2006; her parents; and three brothers, Glen Schmidlap, who died in 1990; Clarence Schmidlap, who died in 1919; and William Schmidlap Jr., who died in 1926.

The funeral was at Kent Christian Church. Burial was in Kent Cemetery.
