He was the son of Benjamin and Mabel (Harmer) Shorten. Like many families of Saint David's P. E. church in Manyunk, his father worked at a mill. His family may be found on the 1910 census for Philadelphia, living at 4250 Terrace Street, the same address as is on the accompanying death certificate. His elder siblings were George and Ron. The 1920 census also shows his younger sibling was Harry, born after Earl passed on. The remaining family lives on Fowler Street, boarding with Sarah West. Father "Benj" is listed as a mill hand at a worsted mill.
It is believed Earl Ezra was named for his father's brother Ezra.
Earl Ezra Shorten's cause of death is listed as "inanition" which Merriam Webster's dictionary defines as "the exhausted condition that results from lack of food and water."
His mother, Mabel, would die only 6 years later. She is interred in the nearby Leverington Cemetery, and an online space is set up for her here on FindAGrave as well.
