Inventor. He was a physics professor whose love of the ocean led him to revolutionize diving by inventing the neoprene wetsuit. In 1951, experimenting with neoprene, a synthetic rubber-like substance, he found that it would trap the water between the body and the neoprene, thus the water would heat up to body temperature to keep you warm. His new wetsuit was officially released to open market in an ad in Skin Diver Magazine in 1954. The neoprene wetsuit went on to revolutionize surfing, scuba diving and water sports world wide. His other endeavors to water equipment, included underwater contact lenses, a single-hose regulator, a decompression meter and he developed a loop system for quickly extracting U.S. Navy SEALs from the water via inflatable boats. He also helped develop the atomic bomb as a young scientist with the Manhattan Project during World War II. He died of pneumonia.
