"RMS Titanic" Victim. He gained fame when he died in the sinking of the "RMS Titanic" on April 15, 1912. He was a coal trimmer. There was a long-held belief that his name was James, but further research determined it to have been Joseph. He was the son of Patrick and Katherine) Dawson. He had a younger sister named Maggie, and a half-sister, Bridget, through his mother. He joined the British Army in Dublin on July 21, 1908, and served in the Army Medical Corps. After serving three years, he was transferred into the Army reserves and immediately entered merchant service. He signed on with the Titanic as a trimmer on April 6, 1912. His body was recovered, and he was buried with other Titanic crew and passengers on May 8, 1912. The story of Jack Dawson depicted in James Cameron's 1997 "Titanic" film was based on fiction. James Cameron admitted he did not know until after the film had been released that there had been a real person with the surname of Dawson who, in fact, had drowned in the Titanic disaster. However, many visitors to the Titanic victims section of Fairview Lawn Cemetery pay homage to the fictional "J. Dawson" at the grave of the real J. Dawson.
