Born William Alphonsus Bahr, son of Conrad and Margaret(Sherman) Bahr, brother of Conrad Richard, John T.,and Henry Aloysius. Although references differ on his place of birth, Conrad Bahr's Pension File has documentation of the following: "Fort Fetterman, Wyo. Oct 16, 1880 This will certify that on Oct 16, 1879, at Fort Fetterman, Wyoming, a male child was born to Maggie Bahr, wife of Conrad Bahr, 1st Srgt. Co, "G" 4th U.S. Infantry, signed by Capt.Edward B. Mosely, Med Dept, Post Surgeon."
To quote from the book "Young Babe Ruth" by Brother Gilbert, C.F.X.:"Originally, he was a schoolboy from nearby Mount St. Joseph's who joined the Xaverian novitiate at age 16. The Brothers' Menology declares that 'As a young teacher and well into middle age, he was the object of awesome wonder at recess time when he handled a baseball. One of his proteges was George Herman Ruth who became the home-run king.' The young and athletic Herman has been referred to as perhaps Ruth's closest pal among the Brothers. Herman was in charge of the boys in the yards during recreation time and was St. Mary's athletic director. He frequently engaged in baseball activities with the Babe, and he literally batted his way into Ruth's heart. It should be noted that George Herman Ruth selected his middle name out of deference to the Brother who mentored him when he was studying to receive the Catholic sacrament of Confirmation."
Brother Herman was a superior athlete in his own right. According to the Washington Post obituary, Dec. 25, 1956, he was "once a 10-second man in the 100-yard dash." My mother, age 91, has memories of "Uncle Willie" coming home for several weeks during the summer,"tan, athletic, loving all sports and good with kids". I'm proud of my uncle; he was a good man who provided a source of inspiration for emerging youth. He lived the motto of the Xaverian Brothers..."Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt"..."by harmony small things grow."
