Calvin is a son of Moses and Elizabeth Thomas Jones. He was married to Martha "Patsey" Browning on April 8, 1827 by Lemuel R Harrison, JP in Franklin County, Illinois.

Calvin was a farmer and millwright. He is credited with having built the first horse mill in Franklin County.

Calvin was ordained a deacon of the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in October 1841.

The children of Calvin and Martha include: Mary Jones Burkett, 1830-1870; Martha A Jones Jenkins, born 1834; Allen Jones, 1836-1901; Martin Jones, 1840-1913; Nancy Jones Hammond, 1845-1896; and Levi Monroe Jones, 1847-1931.

Calvin died at age 35 years, 8 months.
