Martin enlisted in Company C, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Mary 20, 1861 at 28 years of age for a 3-year term of service. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain (Fox's Gap) in Frederick County, Maryland, September 14, 1862. He was removed to the General Hospital located in the Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, Maryland where a leg was amputated. Zion Lutheran Church is still an active church. He died of gangrene, December 15, 1862, as recorded by G. W. Cory, Acting Assistant Surgeon.

Little is known about Martin. His name was also spelled "Haack." Perhaps more information might be found in Martin's compiled military service record available from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. No pension application index card could be found for him, however.

The large monument in the second two photos at right is of the 23rd Ohio Infantry monument in Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio. His name is on the monument as being killed in action.
