Narrative of Case 0177-0-01:
On 22 October 1965, Captain Robert L. Mann, First Lieutenant John Weger, Jr., and First Lieutenant James A. McEwen were the crew aboard an RB-66 aircraft (Serial Number 53-0452) on a night reconnaissance mission. Shortly after a radio transmission, the crew of another aircraft in the area observed a fireball reflection against the clouds to the North of the mission area assigned to Captain Mann's aircraft. They attempted radio contact with Captain Mann, but received no response. On 23 October 1965, search and rescue forces located the crash site in the vicinity of grid coordinated YA841758, approximately 40 kilometers West-Southwest of Kon Tum, Kon Tum Province. On 4 December 1965, a graves and registration specialist searched the crash site but found no remains. On 29 April 1966, flying safety personnel visited the crash site and recovered a severely damaged parachute harness embedded with human remains. It was their opinion that the occupants of the aircraft did not parachute from the aircraft before the crash.
On 2 January 1993, a joint team traveled to Mo Ray Village (YA769916), Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province to investigate this cause. The team interviewed two witnesses who provided information concerning the crash of a US jet aircraft on Tem Dar Mountains (YA841768) around the end of 1965. The first witness said he and five other members of his unit went to the crash site and found small fragments of charred aircraft debris scattered over a large area on the side of the mountain. They found no personal effects, remains or anything large enough that could be readily identifiable. The second witness was present during the interview of the first witness and had no additional information to furnish. The witnesses provided information probably associated with this case.
On 22 January 1994, a joint team traveled to Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province to investigate case 0177. The team did not locate any additional witnesses for this case. The team flew over the record loss location but was unable to locate a potential landing zone. Vietnamese officials indicated it would take at least three days to walk to the site and stated the area had steep slopes, cliffs and dense vegetation.
On 13 May 1966, John Weger, Jr. was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain with an effective date of 22 October 1965.
He has a grave marker at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Sylmar, California. He is also listed on panel 02E -- Line 132 on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. He was from San Fernando, California.
