Harshbarger, Leonard Tullis, - Born January 5, 1912 and died December 28, 2010, just a few days short of his 99th birthday. His goal was to make it to 100, as he said that would be the only 100 he ever achieved. Leonard's good humor was legendary, as was his friendliness, hospitality, and intense love for his family.

He was born on a farm five miles outside the little town of Atwood, Illinois, one of three children. In high school he ran track and played basketball, then ran track for Bradley University. In 2007 his past athletic achievements were featured in an article in the Champaign, IL newspaper.

Leonard married Mary Arlene Robertson in August 17, 1931. They had four children, Leonard A. Harshbarger (Andy) of St. Petersburg, FL; Timothy H. Harshbarger of Seminole, FL; Sabina McKahan of St. Petersburg, FL; and Mary Dearmin of Carriere, MS.

Leonard was stationed in England when he served as a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He bought his first business in downtown Atwood, Harshbarger's Drug Store. In a visit to the small town in 2002, Leonard had barely gotten out of the car when people stopped their cars to come see the former resident. Everyone had good memories of his friendship of 50 years prior.

Leonard moved his family to Columbia Missouri where he bought another business, Harshbarger's Florist, and a farm for the family outside of town. During the short time that he lived in there, he was active in the community. He was voted to be the president of the school board and served on the Olivet Church Board.

After some hard winters, he moved his family to sunny Madeira Beach in Florida, where he bought his third successful business, the Mr. H Drive-In, a landmark of the beaches for almost 20 years. Leonard was well known and well loved as 'Mr. H.' He sold the property in 1976, retiring to do extensive RV traveling throughout the United States.

Leonard thoroughly enjoyed his 25 years of retirement with his wife of 69 years, Arlene, until her passing on January 6, 2001. He continued to be active with his children, their spouses, his eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Even as his health failed, he was always the center of family gatherings. He was an honored participant in the Madeira Beach Memorial Day Veterans' Boat Parade through 2009. Leonard will truly be missed by his family and friends. His zest for life and determination to live it to the fullest will live forever in the hearts of the many who loved him. His was the epitome of a life well lived and well loved.

Visitation held 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the funeral home. Funeral services officiated by Dr. Armand Weller held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2010 at the funeral home with committal prayers and entombment following at Garden Sanctuary Cemetery.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Garden Sanctuary Funeral Home.
