Mr. Bobby L. (Bob) Akins, age 73, died on Sunday at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Carroll County native had lived in Statesboro for many years. He attended school in Perry in Houston County. He served in the Merchant Marines in 1945-1946. He was a business entrepreneur and established Ideal Termite and Pest Control Co., Quality Exterminators of Georgia, Town and Country Ice Company, Bob's Save a Dollar Mint Mart and Akins Bonding Co. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro, the Ancient Landmark Masonic Lodge #231 and the Alee Shriners of Savannah. He was also a member and former director of the Professional Bondsmen Inc. and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Melba Brewton Akins of Statesboro, one daughter, Candis L. Akins of Marietta; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bobby L. and Allison Akins of Decatur, Ala, and Ricky Akins of Cleveland, Tenn.; one step-son and step daughter-in-law, Glen and Sandra Manners of South Portland, Maine; one sister, Bobbie Lou Farrari of South Lyon, Mich.; three grandchildren, Christoper Akins of Orlando, FL, Anna Akins of Marietta and Karyn Manners Gilbert of Portland, Maine; one great-grandson, Brannen Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. H. William Perry officiating.

Intombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers include John Allen Smith, Bobby Durden, Harry Strictland, Ellis Wood, Matt Wood, and Don Suddeth.

Honorary Pallbearers include the Coffee Club at Franklin's Restaurant and the Board of Directors at Billy Tillman's Pond House.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
