George W. Greeno was the son of Andrew b. abt 1802 and Margaret (Morris) Greeno b. abt 1808 in Ohio. On 15 May 1866 he married Mary Eppert in Clay County, Indiana and they had three children Charles, Franklin P., and Ida May. Mary passed away and on 24 October 1878 he married Mary Cheesman in Vigo County, Indiana and they had seven children Harry, Anna, Brooks, Emma, George, Clifford, and Katherine. The 1900 census of the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Childrens Home in Center, Rush County shows Brooks, Emma, George, Clifford, and Katie as orphans.

The Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana Vol. VI 1861-1865 states that the date of muster for the 4th regiment of the Indiana cavalry was on 07 August 1862 and mustered out on 29 June 1865. It also lists George W. Green(o) as a bugler. He mustered in as a Teamster and mustered out a Private. Although he suffered with afflictions throughout his three years of service, his pension records show he was listed as being present with his company in Sep/Oct 1863 (battle of Chickamauga).

George's pension records from the National Archives consists of over two hundred pages of documentation. He is listed as a bugler and the record shows that he was hospitalized during most of his tour of duty. His physical injuries sustained from his service plagued him until his death. The record lists all of his children with Mary Cheesman and their birth dates. It includes Mary Epperts and Mary Cheesmans dates of marriage and dates of death. It also shows that he maintained a close relationship with the Eppert family after his first wife Mary Eppert passed away.
