John J. Judy was born Sept. 1, 1834. His brother, James B., was born Nov. 10, 1844. Both were born in Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri. They both enlisted
in the Twelfth Kansas Volunteer Infantry, Co. H, on Aug. 11, 1862, and were mustered in on Aug. 30, 1862.

The booklet "Civil War Monuments and Memorials in the Greater Kansas City Area,"
published by the Civil War Roundtable of Western Missouri noted: they were "shot
by Quantrill's raiders just as they left the Union Army recruiter's office,
wearing their new Union Army coats."
