Enlisted at Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia on July 20, 1861 into the 16th Regiment Georgia Infantry Company G "Jackson County Volunteers" aka "Jackson Rifles."

Died Oct 4, 1862 as a result of wounds received Sept 14, 1862 at the Battle of Crampton's Gap (South Mountain) near Burkittsville, Md.

Affidavit of his father, James D Gilmer, states that "said B F Gilmer entered the service at Jefferson in Jackson County and State of Georgia on or about the 20th day of July 1861, and died at Burkittsville, Md [sic] on or about the 3rd day of October 1862, leaving neither wife nor child him surviving."

Listed on postwar roster as follows:
Gilmer, Benjamin F.- private July 20, 1861. Wounded in 1862. Died of wounds, in Burkittsville, Md. hospital, October 4, 1862.

Burial is unknown, but many bodies of Confederate soldiers who were killed or died of wounds were removed to this cemetery so I'd like to hope that he too has found a final resting place there. (Thank you On the Trail)
