Oakland, California, was Sister Mary Damian's home, and Saint Elizabeth Elementary, High School, and Parish, were the center of her life as she grew up. One of 5 children born to August Wilson and Alice Eicholzer, Sister was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Alice Smith and Ethel, and her two brothers, John and Vincent. Sister leaves 4 devoted nieces, Jan Bassett, Sylvia Berry, Sandra Carver and Deborah Smith, and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Sister Mary Damian was a dedicated educator who spent her life working with children in the elementary grades, 44 years as classroom teacher,followed by 16 years as school librarian. Sister taught in Dominican schools throughout Northern and Southern California and Portland, Oregon. Noted for her friendly nature, her sense of humor, her love for children and her educational ministry, Sister Mary Damian is fondly remembered by her former students. Since Sister Mary Damian died close to the day that Sister Irmengard Flori passed away, the celebration of their lives will take place Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the Dominican Sisters' Mother house, 43326 Mission Blvd. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 5 p.m. Burial will take place at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, at the cemetary at the Motherhouse.
