Surgoinsville- George A. Golden, Jr. 78, of Surgoinsville passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning (March 15, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Surgoinsville. George was a graduate of Surgoinsville High School where he excelled as a basketball player & baseball player. He retired from TVA as a master mechanic with over 22 years of service who was admired in his trade by his peers. Mr. Golden was a friend to everyone and was always ready to come to the aid of those in need. He was a member of the Overton # 5 F&AM, Rogersville, Tennessee. He was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. George owned several local businesses in the Surgoinsville area. He was instrumental in organizing the Surgoinsville Police Department. He served as alderman for the City of Surgoinsville for many years eventually serving as the city's mayor. George was a member of First United Methodist Church, Surgoinsville. He loved to listen to Bluegrass music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Golden, Sr. & Rosa Golden; his son-in-law, Michael West; a sister, Ruth Simmons along with several half-brothers & half-sisters.

George A. Golden, Jr. is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Donna Golden; his children, Greg A. Golden, Sr., Gwen Golden Lawson Carlock & her husband, Thomas, Kim Matthews & her husband, Glenn, Brooke West, Georgina Golden, Dena Alley & her husband, Kim, Debbie Bundren & her husband, David; his grandchildren, Greg Golden, Jr., Jeremy Golden, Eric Gordon, Katie Lawson, Tasha West, Travis West, Jon-Isaac West, Jarrod Brown, Jordan Brown, Trevor Golden & Cole DuBois along with his three great-grandchildren; a brother, Dane Golden & his wife, Jenny; special friends, David Brand & Gerald Ward.

A visitation will be held on Monday (March 17, 2008) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or friends may also call anytime at the residence.

A memorial service will be conducted on Monday (March 17, 2008) at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Cynthia Thompson officiating.

A private graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday (March 18, 2008) at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Kim Alley, David Bundren, David Brand, Gerald Ward, Charles Presley & Tom Williams.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Surgoinsville, P.O. Box 134, Surgoinsville, Tennessee 37873.
