Johann `John` Joachim Philipp Engelhardt
Born in Priemen (Mecklenburg-Vor), Germany

John and Maria immigrated with all of their children with the exception of Rudolph who is believed to have immigrated a year earlier. They immigrated aboard the ship "New Orleans" out of Hamburg which landed in New York - July 1862.

In 1862 they settled on a farm near Garnavillo. Their children were all born in Germany. They include: Rudolph, Juliane (Reinke), William, Augusta (Krambeer), Charles, Henry, and Minnie (Heckendorf).

The following are excerpts from memories of Pearl Engelhardt (Granddaughter to John):
John Engelhardt Sr. came with his family from Germany and took up 3 sections of land (Pearl does not remember how much). John Sr. was a fiddler and played for parties and dances in their home. Pearl`s mother (Wilhelmina "Minnie" Taake) said that her grandma Maria Engelhardt (Mary) was a saintly woman and that John was a peppy guy.
