By 1845 the family had left Pennsylvania. They went through Detroit and after a brief stay in Chicago they settled in Marshall County, Illinois.

Twelve years later, in 1857, while still living in Marshall County, James and Margaret both were victims of the diphtheria epidemic that hit Illinois. As their means were modest they had to be buried in an unmarked graves somewhere in Marshall/Woodford Co, IL.
