Barbara grew up in New York, where she lived until moving to North Carolina on December 3, 1979, with her three children, Colleen, Gerard, and Matthew. She married James Keith Bost in April 1988, and inherited three more children that she treated as her own, Mark, Meg, and Damon. She devoted 20 years of service to Willowhaven Country Club before retiring in February 2006. She was an active and committed parishioner at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Durham, where she served on the finance committee and as a Eucharistic minister.
Barbara was truly 'universally loved' by all who knew her. She will be remembered always for her humor, her love for family and friends, her ability to bring out the best in those whose lives she touched. She faced her illness with the same grace and dignity that she faced every challenge in her life, without complaint or anger or regret, and with complete faith in God's plan for her.
Her legacy is her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Keith; beloved mother, Mary Pettigrew; devoted sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Larry DeGray; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Kelly Pettigrew; sister, Anita Miller; sister, Deborah Baker, children, step-children, and their spouses, Darrell and Colleen Key, Gerard and Susan McClernon, Matthew and Lisa McClernon, Marcus and Angel Bost, Charles and Meg Miller, and Damon and Rachel Bost. She was most proud of her 11 grandchildren, Andrew and Abigail McKenzie, Jonathan and Jordan Key, Morgan and Jacob Bost, Alexis and Grace McClernon, Caleb Bost, and Alexus and Emily McClernon.
