James Schoolbred Gibbes was born in Charleston, SC., the son of Joseph and Amelia Schoolbred Gibbes. He became one of the most noted and successful merchants in the city. He was a great lover of art and he left a $100,000 trust to erect a museum of art. The museum, which is named for him, is located at 136 Meeting St., in the Historical District
