Chester Cooley, Sr. was the second of four (documented) children born to Timothy Cooley and Rebecca (Smith) Cooley.
In the "Portrait and biographical record of Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Van Buren Counties, Michigan," (pub. May 1892, Chapman Bros., Chicago), a brief biography of Chester is given on p. 888:
"Chester Cooley was son of Timothy Cooley, who was the fifth generation from Scottish ancestry. Timothy Cooley married Rebecca Smith, and they were the parents of four sons, three daughters. Chester Cooley was born in Berkshire, MA, removing to Wyoming County, NY at an early day. He was a wagonmaker by trade and served in the War of 1812. He removed, in 1828, to Portage Co., OH, and about 1850, came to Michigan. He was born March 29, 1790 and died in Cheshire, Allegan Co., this state, December 24, 1857.
