Charles Robert Hilliard. Died at his home about 3:00 in the morning after an illness of several months. 94 years old. Was one of the most active and remarkable men Page County has ever had. He has been married 5 times and has outlived 4 of his wives. He fought in the Civil War and had a record of remarkable bravery. For many years he hauled extract wood across the Blue Ridge mountains through all kinds of weather conditions and many times slept out in the open under the stars wherever he happened to stop on account of darkness. Up to a few months ago, he put in a full days work on his farm every day. Many of his neighbors attest the fact that it took a good man to keep up with him. All through his illness, he was restrained with great difficulty from getting up and putting on his clothes and going about his daily chores. The greater part of Page County's history has transpired during the life of Mr. Hilliard. He helped to build the famous Gordonsville Turnpike and afterwards hauled over it for many years. "Luray Eastern Star Entertains Veterans
Luray, Va., July 28 – The Eastern Star entertained yesterday afternoon at a picnic at Kauffman's Mill in honor of the remaining Confederate veterans of the county. Those present were: A.T. Somers, of Ida; Charles Hilliard, Wesley McCoy, of Stanley; L.F. Mayes, of Luray and Peter Keyser, of Rileyville. Ministers of the town and their wives were also present. Supper was served and an informal program given "After-dinner" speeches were made by the Ministers and by some of the Veterans. Many old War songs were sung by the group. The Eastern Star has been giving these picnics annually. Those in charge of today's program were: Mrs. C.B. Graves, Worthy Matron and Mrs. J.B. Batman, Secretary. The average age of the veterans is over 85."
