Caroline W. Backus passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. F. Brown in John street at midnight Sunday, aged 83 years, following a shock of paralysis which she suffered about two weeks ago.
Mrs. Backus was born June 30, 1829 at Fort Ann, NY, daughter of the late Sylvenus and Clarissa Sill Cone. She came with her parents to this village when but three years of age and had always made her home here. For several years her father owned all the land on both sides of what is now John street and extending to the river. For years he conducted a wool carding mill on the present location of the Graves gristmill building. He died in his 85th year in 1877.
Since the death of her husband which occurred many years ago, Mrs. Backus had lived with her only daughter, Mrs. Brown. She had long been a member of Trinity Episcopal church here. She is survived by her daughter and four grandchildren.
